Salk, Jonas Edward, 1914–1995, American microbiologist who developed the first effective killed-virus vaccine against polio (1954). The brilliance of Salk's contribution as a research scientist has never been fully acknowledged by the American medical community. His insight that viral vaccines do not need to infect in order to immunize was radical when he proposed it, but it has been borne out. His work made possible the modern array of viral vaccines made from killed viruses or parts of viruses, such as that for hepatitis B. Salk's observation that the cells of the immune system resemble those of the central nervous system led him to hypothesize that disease may involve interrelationships among the genetic system, the nervous system, the immune system, and behavior--and that the nervous and immune systems may follow similar patterns of development. In this respect, Salk was one of the founders of the field of psychoneuroimmunology--the study of how mind, nervous system, and immune system work together. * Jonas Salk - Man Evolving (1985 TV show The Open Mind) | |
